SPORTS ANATOMY LESSON #9

Wrist Flexors and Extensors

The wrist flexors mainly consist of 1) flexor carpi radialis and 2) flexor carpi ulnaris.  These muscles are located in the anterior forearm region on both sides of the body.  The wrist extensors mainly consist of 1) extensor carpi radialis and 2) extensor carpi ulnaris.  These muscles are located in the posterior forearm region on both sides of the body.   All of these muscles are shown in Figure 1 below:

INNERVATION (NERVE SUPPLY)

The flexor carpi radialis is supplied by the median nerve (C6, C7).  The flexor carpi ulnaris is supplied by the ulnar nerve (C8, T1).  The extensor carpi radialis is supplied by the deep radial nerve (C6, C7 and C8) .  The extensor carpi ulnaris is supplied by the deep radial nerve (C6, C7 and C8). See Figure 2 below:

Medain Nerve C6 and C7.  Supplies the flexor carpi radialis.
Ulnar nerve C8 and T1.  Supplies the flexor carpi ulnaris.

Function

The extensor carpi radialis and extensor carpi ulnaris function to extend the wrist.  This occurs during athletic movements such as swinging a golf club, swinging a tennis racket, shooting a basketball and throwing a baseball or football.  See Figure 3 below:
